Living Underwater Just Got a Big Upgrade
DEEP has deployed Vanguard, the first new subsea habitat in the US in decades. The Vanguard is designed to house four people for up to five days, featuring a living chamber, bathroom, and dive center. It operates using saturation diving principles, allowing for longer dive times and potentially serving as a training analog for space missions. This habitat is seen as a stepping stone to DEEP's larger, modular Sentinel habitat, aiming for a sustained subsea presence for research and exploration.
This development advances the feasibility of long-term human habitation and research in subsea environments, potentially accelerating ocean exploration and monitoring capabilities. It also offers new avenues for astronaut training in confined, extreme conditions.
